Web 2.0

Web 2.0 doesn’t seems to be the new word anymore. Though there is so much buzz about it on internet but many a times the information is not clear enough for a layman or end user to understand. I will just try to voice my opinion about it…. Its highly probable that till the time i finish off writing this articles the definition of web 2.0 may have got changed. So here is my current outlook on the subject..

Its funny to see that though not many of us know about it but we are actually using it every now and then… some of us are even involved in its development. In this article i will tell you how…First of all lets see what our very own Wikipedia has to say about web 2.0. Oh did i tell u all that Wikipedia is also one of the part of web 2.0

Web 2.0 encapsulates the idea of the proliferation of interconnectivity and interactivity of web-delivered content.

Now what on earth was that ?

“Web 2.0″ refers to a perceived second generation of web development and design, that aims to facilitate communication, secure information sharing, interoperability, and collaboration on the World Wide Web. Web 2.0 concepts have led to the development and evolution of web-based communities, hosted services, and applications; such as social-networking sites, video-sharing sites, wikis, blogs, and folksonomies (also known as collaborative tagging, social classification, social indexing, and social tagging).

The term was first used by Dale Dougherty and Craig Cline and shortly after became notable after the O’Reilly Media Web 2.0 conference in 2004. Although the term suggests a new version of the World Wide Web, it does not refer to an update to any technical specifications, but rather to changes in the ways software developers and end-users utilize the Web.

So basically Web 2.0 is nothing but mere implementation of smarter ways to communicate on internet. This was made possible because of the recent developments in the programming arena. The development of technologies like AJAX and .net has helped a lot in letting web developers to develop sites as per the user requirement.

So which all sites makes Web 2.0 different from Web 1.0 ?? Here is a list of some known ones.

1. Blogs (Blogspot, wordpress, etc)
2. Social Networking (Orkut, Facebook)
3. Wiki (wikipedia, wiki dictionary, etc)
4. GeoTagging (Google Maps, Wikimapia)
5. Social Bookmarking (StumbleUpon, Digg, del.icio.us, reddit, etc)
6. Web Feeds-RSS (feedburner, Google Reader)
7. Online Office Applications (Google docs, Zoho.com, Adobe Buzz-Word, ThinkFree.com)
8. Twitter

So what is common in all these ?? One being none of them are static webpages. But so is yahoo and msn. The thing which brings them apart is that all these depend on user generated content. It wont be wrong to call them web applications which get its content from the common users who don’t have any idea about the programming and the architecture running in background. It is some kind of abstraction in broader sense. Now the web designer and the content generator can be two entirely different entities.

First four are quite common. I think i can do justice to them but just defining them once.
A blog (a contraction of the term weblog) is a type of website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video.
A social network service focuses on building online communities of people who share interests and/or activities, or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others.
A wiki is a collection of Web pages designed to enable anyone with access to contribute or modify content, using a simplified markup language. Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites and to power community websites.
Geotagging is the process of adding geographical identification metadata to various media such as photographs, video, websites, or RSS feeds and is a form of geospatial metadata.
Lets look on Social Bookmarking in a bit detail.

Social Bookmarking
Google was started by Larry Page and Sergey Brin to keep a catalogue of the good websites of their choice. Later this got transformed into catalogue of everything on internet. But in doing so it created a catalogue of huge amount of nonsensical and useless data. Recently social Bookmarking has started growing as an solution to this problem. No matter what algorithm google uses, it can never be 100% accurate in it. Imaging looking for some information and someone else with the same interest helping you out in it. But this aint seems to be possible always. This is where social bookmarking comes into picture. People with specific interest can keep on bookmarking their favorite websites and share it with the rest of the world. and anyone looking for the similar kind of data can use that. StumbleUpon is one such example. Digg is slightly more advanced as it lets its users to rank the bookmarks as well… so u can get to know how many ppl are actually suggesting any of the search result.

RSS Feeds (Really Simple Syndication)
A web feed (or news feed) is a data format used for providing users with frequently updated content. Content distributors syndicate a web feed, thereby allowing users to subscribe to it. Making a collection of web feeds accessible in one spot is known as aggregation, which is performed by an Internet aggregator (Ex Google Reader). A web feed is also sometimes referred to as a syndicated feed. This becomes quite useful when user wants to keep track of many websites or blogs. User can just register himself to the feed and can get the new updates on that site in a segregated manner just like u receive emails in inbox. Now u need not wonder about which articles u have read in ur favorite blog.. websites like google reader comes handy at these times.
